Radio Jet - blown Neutral Hydrogen Supershells in Spiral Galaxies ?
نویسنده
چکیده
Taking a clue from the pair of HI supershells found in the Scd galaxy NGC 3556 (M 108), we propose a new mechanism for the origin of HI supershells in gas-rich massive galaxies. In this scenario, the two supershells were inflated out of the neutral hydrogen disk due to the localised flaring of a pair of radio lobes formed by the jets ejected from the nucleus during an active phase about ∼ 107 years ago, but have faded away by now. It is shown that the salient features of this supershell pair, such as their symmetrical locations about the galactic centre, the anomalously large energy requirements, the large galactocentric distances, as well as the Z-symmetric hemispherical shapes, find a more natural explanation in terms of this scenario, as compared to the standard models which postulate either a massive starburst, or the infall of external gas clouds. Other possible implications of this hypothesis are briefly discussed.

Neutral hydrogen in radio galaxies: results from nearby, importance for far away
The study of neutral hydrogen emission and absorption in radio galaxies is giving new and important insights on a variety of phenomena observed in these objects. Such observations are helping to understand the origin of the host galaxy, the effects of the interaction between the radio jet and the ISM, the presence of fast gaseous outflows as well as jet-induced star formation. Recent results ob...
متن کاملLinked Evolution of Gas and Star Formation in Galaxies over Cosmic History
We compare the cosmic evolution of star formation rates in galaxies with that of their neutral hydrogen densities. We highlight the need for neutral hydrogen to be continually replenished from a reservoir of ionized gas to maintain the observed star formation rates in galaxies. Hydrodynamic simulations indicate that the replenishment may occur naturally through gas infall, although measured rat...
متن کاملAcceleration of Galactic Supershells by Lyα Radiation
Scattering of Lyα photons by neutral hydrogen gas in a single outflowing ’supershell’ around star forming regions often explains the shape and offset of the observed Lyα emission line from galaxies. We compute the radiation pressure that is exerted by this scattered Lyα radiation on the outflowing material. We show that for reasonable physical parameters, Lyα radiation pressure alone can accele...
متن کاملAre HI Supershells the Remnants of γ-Ray Bursts?
Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are thought to originate at cosmological distances from the most powerful explosions in the Universe. If GRBs are not beamed then the distribution of their number as a function of γ-ray flux implies that they occur once per ∼ (0.3–40) million years per bright galaxy and that they deposit ∼> 10 53 ergs into their surrounding interstellar medium. The blast wave generated b...
متن کاملRadio Jet in Ngc 7479
The barred galaxy NGC 7479 hosts a remarkable jet-like radio continuum feature: bright, 12-kpc long in projection, and hosting an aligned magnetic field. The degree of polarization is 6%–8% along the jet, and remarkably constant, which is consistent with helical field models. The radio brightness of the jet suggests strong interaction with the ISM and hence a location near the disk plane. We ob...
